I grew up in Chicago of Ukrainian-Austrian parents, my father a city bus driver and mother an Illinois Bell telephone operator, with an older brother and sister. I attended the two-year University of Illinois at Navy Pier (1951-1953). I was the Vice President of a student organization promoting the need for a four-year university which later became The University of Illinois in Chicago; Circle Campus (UIC).
I also graduated with a degree in journalism from Michigan State University (1953-1955) where he was an editor of the student newspaper. "
I am a former Chicago Tribune, City News Bureau reporter, and magazine editor. I served two years in the U.S. Army as managing editor of the 3rd Armored Division newspaper, Spearhead, in Fort Knox, Ky., and Frankfurt, Germany, from 1955 to 1957. for the last 40 years have been a freelance writer of magazine articles.
